Catchy electropop with ironic lyrics and carefully crafted vocal arrangements. That is, more or less, the definition of Canal Pop's music given by Emiliano Canal, the man behind the project. And the 4-tracks EP High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys is the proof that the definition still applies.

"Contrary to what people may think, catchy pop music is very difficult to make, because you have to combine a few very effective elements in a very little time, and everything has to fit perfectly. Anyone can make an experimental 15 minutes ode full of chords and strange noises, the difficult think is to make people dance in 3 minutes", says Emiliano about his songs. Maybe he knows what he talks about, since he's the owner/ director of Eternal Sunday, a label specialized in releasing Argentinean artists who sing in English, and that job forces him to listen dozens of new bands and songs every week.

"I love to own a label but the cons are that it takes time away from my own musical projects like Canal Pop. The label forces you to think and work in a different way, especially about marketing and airplay, and it becomes difficult to sit at the studio to mix a song or to simply try new music ideas at the keyboard. It's like owning a football team and wanting to go to kick a corner shot at the same time, it is not very practical." Maybe because of this High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys is a 4-tracks EP. "To record and finish a complete album was taking too much time for me, and it's not that important nowadays since people consumes music in a different way. I think it's better to have an EP with four solid songs and not a 15-tracks album with ten fillers".

After a first listen, the four songs in High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys seem to be solid enough. "Two Of A Kind" opens, a story with a somehow erotic innuendo and sexy plays of words ("we're two of a kind, 'cause you've got a sexy body and I have a dirty mind"). "A Place" follows, based on a true story, a song that describes a confused girl who doesn't know if she likes girls or boys. "I went out with some friends and a pretty girl came to say hi and when asked how was everything she said not very good, because I don't know if I like girls or boys", Emiliano remembers. This song has a lot of fans, and I suppose it is because it's about being young, not knowing what you want, being afraid of showing yourself the way you are, wanting to go far away, and all the issues of sexual ambiguity, of not matching a certain social ideal. The third song is "Electricity", a song that was chosen in 2011 (among thousands) to be part of the Face The Beat compilation, released by the portal/ magazine Side Line, from Belgium, property of the owners of Alfa Matrix, the most important electro/ industrial/ EBM label in the world. "All the classic electropop band have a song called 'Electricity' and I didn't want to be exception", explains Emiliano. "Of course I tried to give it a sexier connotation ('plug your love into me') because I like to make those plays of words. I think it worked, because the people from Side Line liked it and they have more than a thousand tracks to choose from for their compilation". The EP closes with "For Falling (In Love)", a song that Canal Pop recorded a few times before but was never released. "The chorus simply came to my head. I was in my apartment and heard on my head the 'Oh eh oh, this is a night for falling in love'. I sat at the keyboard and noticed that the musical phrase had a 2/4 bar that complicated everything, but the melody was so catchy that I wrote the rest of the song. I needed to record several versions to be satisfied, when you have a very catchy idea everything you add on top of it tends to interfere".

As Canal Pop, Emiliano Canal works alone ("I deal with enough musicians as a label owner"), so all the keyboards, the production and the arrangements are his. The exception are the voices, Canal Pop has collaborated with very interesting female singers like Gaby Laguzzi (We Never Play Live In Buenos Aires, 2007), Bea Conenna, born in New York (Ecstatic Days single, 2008), sexy Lara Sambert who later appeared on prime time Argentinean TV show Cantando Por Un Sueño, the equivalent of Singing With The Stars, and who toured Greek and Turkey) (An Electro Tribute To Oasis, 2010) and this time Paula Varela AKA Polette, one of Buenos Aires' top singers and sessionist who shared stages with Shakira, Deep Purple and countless other local stars. "Polette is, by far, the best singer I worked with. It is not only about singing nice, but about understanding what the producer and the song need, and Polette has an unique quality, she sings my songs in a nasal, Kylie Minogue way, after that she goes to a jazz club to sing jazz or funk like a diva and then she records a jingle for a canned soup, and she does everything right. That's why everyone calls her, it is an honor to work with her". As in every Canal Pop release, the vocal arrangements are very precise and elaborated, with crystal clear backing vocals coming and going, with little delays and echoes here and there (only noticed with headphones and the traditional robot-like vocoder and lo fi vocals. Canal Pop is back.

Electropop pegadizo con letras irónicas (en inglés) y arreglos vocales cuidados. Palabras más o menos esa es la definición de la música de Canal Pop que da Emiliano Canal, el hombre detrás del proyecto. Y el EP de 4 temas High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys es una prueba de que la fórmula sigue vigente.

"Contrariamente a lo que la gente puede pensar, la música pop pegadiza es la más difícil de hacer, porque hay que combinar elementos muy efectivos en muy poco tiempo y todo tiene que funcionar perfectamente. Cualquiera hace una oda experimental llena de acordes y de ruidos raros que dure 15 minutos, lo difícil es hacer bailar a la gente en 3", comenta Emiliano cuando habla de sus canciones. Quizás sepa de lo que habla, ya que su actividad paralela (¿principal?) es la de ser el dueño/ director del sello Eternal Sunday, sello especializado en lanzar artistas argentinos con material en inglés, oficio que le demanda escuchar docenas de bandas y canciones nuevas por semana.

"Tener un sello me encanta pero tiene la contra de que le resta mucho tiempo y energías a mis propios proyectos puramente musicales como Canal Pop. El sello te obliga a trabajar y a pensar de otra forma, sobre todo en las cuestiones de márketing y difusión, y cuesta ponerse a terminar una mezcla o a probar ideas en el teclado. Tener un sello y querer ser artista es como ser directivo de un club y querer ir a cabecear un córner, es poco práctico". Quizás por eso High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys es un EP de 4 tracks. "Grabar y terminar un álbum completo me estaba llevando demasiado tiempo, y hoy la gente consume música de otra manera, es preferible tener un EP de cuatro canciones sólidas y no un álbum de quince tracks de los cuales diez son relleno".

A primera escucha, las cuatro canciones de High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys parecen ser suficientemente sólidas. Abre "Two Of A Kind", una historia con insinuaciones eróticas y juegos de palabras sexys ("we're two of a kind, 'cause you've got a sexy body and I have a dirty mind"/ somos tal para cual, porque tenés un cuerpo sexy y yo tengo una mente sucia). Sigue "A Place", una historia basada en un hecho real, que describe a una chica confundida que no sabe si le gustan los chicos o las chicas. "Salí con un grupo de amigos y una chica bastante linda vino a saludar alguien y cuando le preguntaron cómo estaba dijo mal, porque no sé si me gustan los chicos o las chicas", recuerda Emiliano Canal. "Esta canción siempre gustó, supongo que porque habla de cosas como el de ser joven, no tener claro lo que se quiere, tener miedo de mostrarse como uno es, de querer irte lejos y toda la cuestión de la ambigüedad sexual, de no encajar en un molde social predeterminado". El tercer tema es "Electricity", canción que fue elegida (entre miles de postulantes) en 2011 para ser parte de la compilación Face The Beat lanzada por la revista/ portal Side Line, de Bélgica, de los dueños de Alfa Matrix, el sello electro/ industrial/ EBM más importante del mundo. "Todas las bandas electropop clásicas tienen un tema llamado 'Electricity' y no quise ser la excepción", explica Emiliano. "Por supuesto, me tomé el atrevimiento de darle una connotación más sexy en la letra ('plug your love into me', enchufame tu amor) porque es lo que me gusta hacer, tomar un tema cualquiera y darle un doble sentido. Creo que quedó bien, porque a la gente de Side Line les gustó, y tenían miles de canciones de todo el mundo para elegir para la compilación". El EP cierra con la híper pegadiza "For Falling (In Love)", una canción que Canal Pop ya había grabado pero nunca lanzado. "El estribillo me vino de repente, estaba en mi departamento un día y escuché en mi cabeza el 'Oh eh oh, this is a night for falling in love'. Me senté al teclado y noté que la frase tenía un compás de 2/4 que complicaba todo, pero la melodía era tan pegadiza que compuse el resto del tema. Tuve que grabar varias versiones para estar medianamente satisfecho, cuando aparece una idea muy pegadiza y muy sólida todo lo que uno tiende a meter la ensucia".

Como Canal Pop, Emiliano Canal trabaja solo ("ya trato con suficientes músicos como dueño de un sello"), por lo que todos los teclados, la producción y los arreglos son suyos. La excepción son las voces. Canal Pop ha colaborado con cantantes (femeninas) muy interesantes como Gaby Laguzzi (We Never Play Live In Buenos Aires, 2007), Bea Conenna, nacida en Nueva York (Ecstatic Days single, 2008), la sensual Lara Sambert (luego participante del programa de TV Cantando Por Un Sueño y con giras a Grecia y Turquía) (An Electro Tribute To Oasis, 2010) y esta vez es el turno de Paula Varela AKA Polette, multifacética cantante y sesionista de Buenos Aires que ha compartido escenarios con Shakira, Deep Purple e incontables estrellas locales. "Polette es la mejor cantante con la que he trabajado, por lejos. No se trata sólo de tener una bonita voz sino de interpretar lo que el productor y la canción están pidiendo, y Polette tiene una ductilidad única, canta mis temas con una voz algo nasal a lo Kylie Minogue y después sale y va a un club a cantar jazz y funk como una diva y después termina el día grabando un jingle de sopas instantáneas, y hace todo bien. Por algo trabaja con los mejores y la llaman siempre. Es un honor grabar con ella", confiesa Emiliano. Como en todos los lanzamientos de Canal Pop, los arreglos vocales son elaborados, prolijos, con coros cristalinos entrando y saliendo todo el tiempo, con pequeños ecos y delays que se aprecian sólo con auriculares, y no faltan ni los ocasionales vocoders robotizados ni las voces low fi. Canal Pop está de regreso.

The song "Electricity" by Canal Pop was chosen among thousands of submissions as part of Face The Beat, released by Side Line, Belgium. Side Line was founded in 1989 and it's the most important magazine/ portal in the electro/ industrial scene in the world. It is owned by the guys who run Alpha Matrix, the prestigious label that release material by bands like Front 242 or Nitzer Ebb.

Face The Beat contains 50 tracks that were chosen among 1258 submissions. The idea was to create a compilation for the almost 40 thousand Side Line fans on Facebook, and the chosen bands were the ones who had profiles in that social network. This is the first electronic music compilation (and probably the first one in any genre) to be released exclsusively using Facebook, which demonstrates Facebook's value as a music platform.

Eternal Sunday presents Southern Electro Originals, the ultimate compilation of electropop from Argentina with vocals in English.

Since its beginnings in 2006 the label Eternal Sunday had the objective of developing (and then exporting to the world) artists that are part of the Argentinean pop scene with songs in English. This local scene exists, and many of its artists are extremely talented, they write, perform and record great songs of a superb quality, that can sound next to any international hit.

To prove this Eternal Sunday releases Southern Electro Originals, The ultimate compilation of electropop from Argentina. The album has 13 killer tracks that go from the ultra catchy uptempo electropop (KooLTURE, Canal Pop), move to the darker side adding industrial sounds (LastraX, Electrofreek), flirt with house music (Mr Charles Deluxe, Alfredo Norese) and reach a killer disco hymn climax (Polette).

The name of the artists may not be familiar to most people, but this doesn't mean they're newcomers: Electrofreek, who's hit "Hear The Music" opens the album, is the project of the legend of rock nacional Tito Losavio, who was a half of the sucessful duo Man Ray during the 90's. He had played with Charly García, Andrés Calamaro, Los Twists, etc. etc.

KooLTURE has made dozens of dance digital releases and is well known in the international underground electropop scene, having remixed and produced artists from around the world. The same happens to Demarco Electronic Project, the techno twins, who appear on a regular basis on the charts at Beatport.com, the most important dance/ electronic music store in the world. They've made all kind of records, from cutting edge electronic music to electronic tango to hard rock.

Polette is the legendary singer Paula Varela who uses to sing dozens of radio and TV jingles each year and had sung next to international stars like Deep Purple and Shakira.

Alfredo Norese is another known producer, ex member of Macaferri & Asociados, a successful 90's band from Argentina and author of many house tracks sold around the world. Auxiliar Channel and LastraX are very well know to fans of gothic/ industrial/ EBM music around the world. Its producer, Tecnoman SF, produces and records regularly European artists for labels from around the world.

A special mention goes to "Ecstatic Days", the collaboration between Canal Pop and Bea. Canal Pop is the project of Emiliano Canal, a producer from Argentina specialized in pop music with vocals in English and Bea is Bea Conenna, singer from New York City who leads Bea Ba, a North American band that makes rock en español. During a visit of Bea to Buenos Aires they got together and recorded this hit, released as a single by Eternal Sunday. They also made a music video that it’s the official music video for this compilation.

Southern Electro Originals was born to show the world the quality of the Argentinean pop music with vocals in English scene. This was a scene who had almost no support from labels till, Eternal Sunday appeared.

Canal Pop is the electropop project of Emiliano Canal, the music producer from Buenos Aires, Argentina, specialized in creating and releasing pop music with lyrics in English, who's also the founder of the Eternal Sunday record label. Bea is an American singer songwriter from New York City whose mother is from Argentina. Bea is a big fan of Argentinean music herself and she regularly performs in the New York area singing (mostly) rock en español. This unique contrast (a producer from Argentina who writes in English and a singer from New York who sings in Spanish) was strange enough to make them record and release a fantastic single: "Ecstatic Days".

"Ecstatic Days" is a hyper catchy song that was written by Emiliano Canal and the producer Sebastián "Curlie" Llobera, who currently lives in Melbourne, Australia. The song posses all the ingredients that are already characteristics of Canal Pop's releases: catchy hooks, furious analog synth lines, carefully arranged vocals with dozens of takes and a melody that's so catchy that it is impossible to ignore after twenty seconds.

The Single 01 also presents the B side "God Speaks In Silence" and a remix of the main song by Alfredo Norese, AKA DJ Mágico, a dance music producer from Argentina. A music video was shot and will soon be in rotation in all music channels.

Eternal Sunday terminó un gran año que incluyó la firma de un contrato con el sello Petrol y la elección de Valerio Rinaldi para el Festival SXSW 2008.

Emiliano Canal, director del sello, explica: ‘El 2007 terminó con una agradable sorpresa para nosotros: firmamos un contrato con el sello Petrol y su subsidiaria Pistol para que el catálogo de Eternal Sunday aparezca en las prestigiosas compilaciones que lanza esta compañía a nivel mundial. Petrol es el sello del mítico australiano CM Murphy, ex mánager de INXS, y es considerado uno de los más importantes del mundo (si no el más importante) en el mercado de la world music y tiene distribución mundial física a través de EMI.

El acuerdo nos fue propuesto por el equipo de A&Rs de Petrol, que es muy activo buscando novedades y dando a conocer los catálogos de sellos promisorios. Nosotros negociamos un punto, a mi entender, muy interesante: les licenciamos no sólo el catálogo de Eternal Sunday, sino mucho material inédito que nuestros productores tienen acumulado, especialmente tracks de electrotango, folklore electrónico, lounge y pop/ rock cantado en inglés.’

La otra novedad es que el artista Valerio Rinaldi fue seleccionado para participar en el Festival SXSW en marzo. ‘Ya lo habíamos adelantado en BAFIM, el SXSW es quizás el festival musical más importante de Estados Unidos y hay bandas que pagan miles de dólares para tener la posibilidad de ser escuchadas en ese ámbito. Aclaro que la gente de la organización no nos cobró ni un dólar ni siquiera por presentar las solicitudes de nuestros artistas, porque habíamos entablado una buena relación en Buenos Aires y sabían que se nos hubiera hecho difícil afrontar esos gastos siendo un sello que recién comienza’, expresa Canal.

‘Estas dos novedades me llenan particularmente de orgullo, porque hablamos de una compañía y un evento de primera línea, y nos ayudan a posicionar a Eternal Sunday donde siempre quisimos estar: a la vanguardia de la nueva música argentina for export, mostrando las creaciones de los artistas locales al mundo y conquistando activamente nuevos mercados para nuestra música’, concluye.

Para cerrar el año, la canción "Stupid SuperStar" de KooLTURE fue elegida como el tema oficial del festival de cine gay y lésbico ‘LesGaiCineVox 07’, que se realizó en noviembre en las provincias de Córdoba y Santa Fe.

Several months ago, somewhere in the city of Buenos Aires singer Gaby Laguzzi and producer Emiliano Canal, also known as Canal Pop, got together to record some songs written by the latter. The combination was a little weird: Emiliano was an electropop producer and songwriter, former member of the duo Plastic Orgasm People, while Gaby Laguzzi was a professional session vocalist with a preference for jazz, Brazilian music and 70's funk and black music. Gaby didn't have a wide knowledge of Emiliano's kind of music, and vice versa. What could came of such a combination?

Magic, that's what. Despise their differences (specially in height, Emiliano is 6' 2'' and Gaby is 5') both of them got incredibly well, musically and personally. Gaby's voice blended perfectly with Emiliano's arsenal of synths and beeps, and Emiliano rewrote some songs to fit Gaby's personality. The catchy "If You Are Like Me" is based purely on the personality of the singer. "I wrote it basically observing Gaby and the things she did", remembers the songwriter.

As the songs were recorded they posted them on Internet, and the USA-based electropop label Section44 asked them a song for their upcoming compilation Sector One. Emiliano and Gaby chose "Cool In Japan", a catchy, ironic song that is based on the real story that the CD's of Plastic Orgasm People, Emiliano's former band, sold better in Japan than in Argentina, their own country. "I felt for a while that, if everything else failed, I could always tour Japan playing my former bands' songs, so this story about a guy who's uncool everywhere else but doesn't care because he's cool in Japan just reflected what I felt" Emiliano recalls. The name of the EP is based on a line of this song.

Two more songs complete the EP, "Lonely Dance", a story about a young girl who has a bad time at a club and "Bless The Ones", a Moby-esque ballad with a heavy loop, a catchy melody, bouncing synths and a spiritual message. Gaby found some of the lines of this song specially difficult to sing. "I was singing for hours lines like 'Down the street/ People walk/ They think they are moving but they're staying at one spot'. If you think that's easy to sing, try to do it standing next to Emiliano who was paying attention to every syllable", Gaby complained later.

The idea was to record enough material for an album, but then Gaby accepted an unusual job: she was chosen from a group of five hundred candidates to sing on board at a transatlantic cruiser. Gaby was ending a four-years relationship with a boyfriend and had a big necessity to get away from it all. Emiliano said OK, and since she has to be on the sea for some eight months, Eternal Sunday releases now these four catchy, ironic and lovely songs. Enjoy them, they won't be played live neither in Buenos Aires not anywhere else for a long time…

Ex Plastic Orgasm People member Emiliano Canal got together with singer Gaby Laguzzi and bpth recorded several songs. The best 4 of those songs were taken to create this must-have EP. As usual with emiliano the songs are ultra catchy, the lyrics are ironic and the vocals are carefully produced. This EP features the song "Cool In Japan" that was released some time ago as part of the electropop compilation Sector One released by the Section 44 label (USA).

We Never Play Live in Buenos Aires is released in two digital editions, the second one with the bonus track "Don't Bring Me Down", an Electric Light Orchestra 70's cover.

The new electro label Eternal Sunday is prepairing a tribute CD to classic Electropop called "Southern Waves - Argentinean tribute to classic electropop". This label specializes itself in electropop sung in English, which is a rare thing in Latin America due to the importance and size of the Latin Market.

The compilation CD will feature some important electronic local bands like the ironic electro duo Canal Pop, Klauss, synthpop pioneers El Signo, Lastrax and the reality show winner and former Bandana star Virginia Da Cunha. These artists will be performing songs originally recorded by Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Madonna, Yazoo/ Yaz, Eurythmics, Camouflage, New Order, SoftCell, etc.

The label will to stablish a reputation in the local and international electro scene so expect a good quality compilation with a profesional mastering, a deluxe packaging, etc. Official release is mid september.

Emiliano Canal es músico, compositor y productor de música pop, generalmente en inglés. Tiene 30 y pico de años y vive en Buenos Aires, Argentina. Formó parte de la banda Plastic Orgasm People junto a Ale Marino, banda que sólo editó un EP y que se disolvió al irse Ale a vivir a Nueva York. La familia de Emiliano vive en Canadá, donde él mismo vivió un tiempo, poniéndolo en contacto con la escena internacional. Ha remixado y producido bandas nacionales y extranjeras y actualmente se encuentra grabando el álbum debut de Canal Pop, su banda junto a la cantante Gaby Laguzzi, y compilando un CD tributo a ser lanzado por Eternal Sunday Records, su flamante sello discográfico especializado en electropop. Esta es la charla de Emiliano con Romina Graciano, periodista, en Mayo de 2006.

Hacés música pop en inglés. ¿Eso es por una razón estética o simplemente para vender tus cosas en más mercados?
Buena pregunta... Diría que en un 66% es una decisión estética y la idea de vender o al menos difundir la música en otros mercados es el 33% restante. O el 34% restante...

¿Sos de la idea de que este tipo de música queda mejor en inglés?
Totalmente. Además el idioma inglés permite a) decir más cosas en menos espacio, porque las palabras y las estructuras de las frases son más cortas, y b) no sé por qué, pero en inglés se pueden decir unas estupideces espantosas y quedan cool. Si uno las dice en español o en portugués o francés quedan como unas cursilerías pero en inglés zafan. Si uno traduce una letra de una canción pop en inglés suena peor en español de lo que queda en inglés.

Es posible, no lo había pensado. O sea que escribís en inglés para podes escribir cosas cursis y que no se note.
(Risas) Mi madre siempre me decía, cursi pero bilingüe (Más risas).

¿Creés que la gente le presta atención a las letras?
Yo siempre le presté atención a las letras. Creo que sí, recuerdo mis compañeros y compañeras del colegio escribiendo letras de canciones en sus agendas y cuadernitos. Cuando una buena letra te toca pasa a ser algo valioso para vos, al menos cuando sos joven. Mi anhelo en algún punto fue poder escribir esas letras, ser el que escribía esas letras.

Pero al estar en inglés quizás esos chicos no puedan entenderlas.
Bueno, yo estudié inglés desde chico, pero sólo empecé a esforzarme cuando empecé a escuchar seriamente música pop, alrededor de los 14, 15 años. A los 14 uno de mis compañeros me pidió que le tradujese un tema de los Beatles y me quedé toda la noche con un diccionario tratando de traducirla. Era un tema de Sgt Pepper's... Después me di cuenta de que los Beatles, especialmente Paul, escribían unas letras medio raras... Cosas como "I'm painting my room/ in a colorful way..." No es una manera muy natural de decir que estás pintando tu cuarto de colores, da la idea de que metía esas frases porque sólo tenía lugar para meter eso... Yo tengo la idea de que esas letras inspiraron algunas cosas que hoy suenan raras del rock nacional, como el "si te han puesto teléfono también tu numeración" de "Canción Para Mi Muerte" de Sui Generis. ¿Qué clase de idiota le pide el teléfono así a una mina? (Risas)

"Numeración" rima con "tu dirección".
Bueno, Charly escribió ese tema muy joven y dentro de un movimiento que aún estaba naciendo, era todo medio hippie... Y ese tema fue un súper hit y lo sigue siendo hoy y vendió millones de copias y a nadie le importó la letra, así que quizás no haya que ser tan purista. A mis compañeras del secundario les gustaba Sui Generis, que ya era una banda prehistórica, aclaro, a ver si se piensan que fue al secundario en 1972... A lo que iba es que hay canciones que funcionan y canciones que no, respeten o no las reglas de la gramática, mal que nos pese a los letrados... Yo no escribiría esa frase, pero pasaron 25 años. Y escribo en inglés...

Estás grabando un disco con tu compañera de banda Gaby pero no están tocando en vivo, ¿es por algo en especial?
No me gusta demasiado tocar en vivo. Llegué a un punto donde me di cuenta de que soy productor, mi ámbito es el estudio. Puedo tocar, puedo salir de gira, pero esperaremos a que el álbum esté terminado y que la cosa esté marchando mejor. Gaby hace como 10 shows por semana, toca en eventos y ese tipo de cosas. Ella toca por los dos. O canta por los dos. Además esto es electropop, el vivo no es tan importante. Si fuera jazz o rock pesado podría ser. Gracias a Dios no lo es.

¿Tiene nombre el álbum?
Se va a llamar Welcome To The Dream. [Bienvenidos al sueño]

Estás escribiendo letras que van a ser cantadas por una mujer, ¿eso ayuda a expresar tu lado femenino?
No, yo expreso mi lado femenino vistiéndome de señora mayor... (Risas). En realidad el inglés tiene una tercer ventaja que es que no se necesita especificar un género. Uno puede decir "you're beautiful" y no se especifica si uno le habla a una chica o a un chico. En español habría que decir "sos lindo" o "sos linda". Además antes trabajaba con un cantante gay, así que no hay mucha diferencia. Yo escribía de la chica que gustaba y él la cantaba pensando en el tipo que le gustaba o en quienquiera que fuese. Además mis letras suelen contar historias, situaciones... No importa mucho si es una chica o un chico el que las canta. Aunque algunos temas como "If You Are Like Me" fueron escritos con Gaby en mente. Esa canción es 100% Gaby. Una pisciana soñadora que siempre aterriza en la realidad pero se las arregla para seguir soñando.

Van a editar un tema de ustedes en una compilación de un sello estadounidense. ¿Cómo surgió eso?
Yo vengo editando cosas afuera desde hace años, y participo en foros y en toda una escena medio under de pop electrónico. La compilación se va a llamar Sector 1, que se dice "Sector one" porque es en inglés y va a ser lanzada por el sello Section 44, es un sello de Estados Unidos. Vamos a compartir cartel con bandas de todo el mundo, hay alemanes, canadienses, daneses, estadounidenses, ingleses, irlandeses... Como suele suceder Canal Pop es la única banda argentina y latinoamericana. Este CD aún no salió a la venta, sale en estos días.

Cambiando de tema, en medio de la grabación de tu CD estás presentando tu sello, Eternal Sunday Records, y están por lanzar un compilado tributo al electropop de los '80. ¿De dónde surgió esta idea?
La idea del sello venía de muchísimo antes, siempre quise editar discos, tener mi sello, darle una mano a artistas más jóvenes que quizás no saben para donde agarrar... Ahora se puede hacer así que lo estamos haciendo... No creo que el sello dañe a Canal Pop como proyecto, por el contrario, me hizo contactarme con un montón de gente que puede colaborar y escuchar lo que hacen otros siempre te sirve... Además va a haber un tema de Canal Pop en el compilado, ya veremos cuál.

¿Hay grandes estrellas en el compilado?
Sí, hay una estrella grande en la tapa (risas). Mentira, va a haber un par de nombres de gente reconocida y a la que respeto mucho.

Algunas canciones [del CD tributo] van a ser grabadas en tu estudio. Veo que estás invirtiendo en equipos.
Antes de ayer me compré unos auriculares buenos, es algo que tendría que haber hecho años atrás. Los míos se habían roto y usaba unos que me había dado mi hermano, una porquería. Gaby los probó ayer y se dio cuenta después de un año de que mis canciones sonaban bien...

De que tus temas tenían agudos.
Agudos y graves...

La idea es sacar Welcome To The Dream de Canal Pop por Eternal Sunday, ¿no?
No, lo ideal sería sacarlo por otro sello. Desconfío de los sellos cuyos dueños se autoeditan y que además trabajan con otros artistas. Eso te hace perder objetividad. Después hay quejas de las otras bandas, ya fui testigo de cosas así...

Como productor solés trabajar con cantantes muy buenos, ¿es casualidad o lo elegís así?
Por suerte me cruzo con gente talentosa. Ale Marino [el cantante de Plastic Orgasm People, la banda anterior de Emiliano] y ahora Gaby son muy talentosos y profesionales los dos. Gaby está más fogueada, hace años que trabaja de esto. Y personalmente creo que las voces son una parte esencial de un tema pop... Voces, coros por todos lados... Las grandes bandas tienen siempre arreglos vocales cuidados, pensá en los Beatles, en Queen, en Madonna, Depeche Mode, Erasure, George Michael... Voces por todos lados.

Se nos acaba el tiempo. ¿Están haciendo un video clip o son rumores?
Estamos por la mitad, falta la parte de la banda. No sabemos dónde vamos a filmar lo que falta, o qué va a ser lo que filmemos, así que creo que la cosa va a tardar un poquito. Va a ser del tema "Ecstatic Days" que abre el álbum.

Vos estudiaste cine, ¿o me equivoco mucho?
Estudié dirección durante un año e hice un curso de escritura de guiones y leí varios libros. Tengo una cierta idea de cómo se filma pero prefiero dejarlo en mano de los profesionales. Uno no puede hacerse el Leonardo Da Vinci y pretender hacer todo. El video tiene un director, Diego Adler de una productora llamada La Tina.
